  • Shortly after the first rains, the thoroughly intriguing Giant African Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas), a.k.a. Shongololo, has emerged from its safe hide-out underground - to feed and to breed. These herbivorous invertebrates are generally harmless creatures, but they do secrete a chemical substance containing cyanide. This is a defense mechanism against ants and other insects as well as some insect-eating mammals. Its primary defense is to roll up in a tight coil.

  • It is not an every day occurrence to see a Giant Eagle Owl wading through water! On my recent visit to the Kgalagdi Transfrontier Park I had a serious thunderstorm at night and the first thing I came across after I eagerly started my morning drive was this big bird enjoying the refreshing rain puddles. Shooting was a challenge with the light being still very low, but at least this old wise owl was not bothered by my presence and I managed to get a few images of this unique sighting.
